Everything is made on your phone rather than on a server, so a long clip genuinely takes a while — and an older phone takes longer than a new one. The waiting screen counts down the time remaining, so you can tell the difference between slow and stuck.
Make a post has no length limit — a clip is posted at its full length. Roughly, expect the render to take a couple of times as long as the clip itself, and longer on an older phone.
Make it vertical does have a limit, because reframing has to hold the whole finished video in memory at once and the engine has a fixed 1 GB ceiling. It works this out before it starts, so if a clip is too long you are told straight away and given the length to trim to — rather than waiting through a render that stops partway and gives you nothing.
On some devices the countdown stops moving while the video is being written. It is still working — the waiting screen says so — and it will finish. Leave the app open and give it time.
Very large source files are the usual cause. Files over 2 GB warn you before you start, and Make it vertical refuses outright anything it works out cannot finish. Closing other apps first helps.
Tap Restore purchase on the Post screen. The purchase is tied to your Apple ID, not to an account with us, so it will come back on any phone signed in with the same Apple ID. If it does not, make sure you are signed in with the Apple ID you bought it on.

Ads are the only thing paying for the app, and an ad cannot load without a connection. If you have bought Remove ads you will not see any ads, but a connection is still needed so the App Store can confirm the purchase.
